I did this drawing in an art class I was taking, but it's too large to scan, so I took a photo of it and posted it here.
This is the Danvers State Hospital, in Danvers, MA. It was a hospital for the mentally ill.
I became interested in this hospital when I learned that it inspired the Arkham Institute of the late HP Lovecraft's stories, which in turn inspired the Arkham Asylum of the Batman comics.
It was originally built in 1878 to hold 600 patients, but by 1939 it held 2,500 patients, and not enough staff, which means many patients died days before any staffers found the corpses.
The first trans-orbital lobotomy was also done here. In it, an ice pick is inserted through the eye socket and into the brain.
Today, most of the buildings which made up that hospital have been torn down and replaced with condos. But this building still stands, as an administrative office for those condos.
Update: I attended a memorial service at 2 burial grounds near this hospital, for the patients who died in it. I showed this drawing to the other attendees, and they loved it! One of them was a MA state representative, who I got my photo taken with.
